ARC Review: The Last Hour by Charles Sheehan-Miles

Twenty-seven year old Carrie Thompson-Sherman has the life she always wanted: her PhD, a prestigious fellowship, and an amazing husband.

Her life begins to unravel as a jealous colleague puts her fellowship in jeopardy and a haunting secret Ray Sherman carried home from Afghanistan comes to light.

Hounded by a federal investigation and the ensuing media feeding frenzy, Carrie and Ray desperately lean on each other, until a disastrous accident puts both Ray and her sister's lives at risk.

In the last hour, Carrie and Ray will each find themselves faced with a choice.

A choice that will change everything.

Oh my goodness Charles... Could you have put your characters through anymore trials? If you've read Just Remember to Breathe and A Song for Julia, then you're familiar with Carrie, Julia and Alex's sister. And you're a little familiar with Ray but are dying to know more.

Well this is the story of Julia and Ray, and their speedy yet deep relationship. The book starts out with Carrie, Ray, Jessica and Sarah (Carrie's twin sisters) are in a car accident. Sarah and Ray are in critical condition and we move through key points of Carrie and Rays relationship through Carrie's remembering and Rays subconscious.

This book strongly focuses on the concept of doing he right thing, even when you know it will hurt yourself and others. When Ray come home from Afghanistan, he reports a crime and now struggles with the ramifications of reporting that crime, which could land himself and his brothers in jail. Carrie struggles to support Ray, while dealing with her own serious issues. Some accusations threaten Carrie's career and the doctorate she worked her whole life to achieve.

How much pain can two people withstand? How much can new love endure? How to you pick yourself up and keep moving when it feels like the whole world is against you? I found myself asking myself these questions as I read this. I've never been more thoroughly gutted, then I was reading this book. This ride we took broke me down and built me back up. It's an incredible story but please, ensure you have a box of tissues with you.
