Review: Broken and Screwed Part 1 by Tijan

February 19, 2013

Alexandra's older brother died the night he graduated. That day changed everything for her. No longer was she the party girl. No longer did she care about being popular and no longer was her family the happy unit she always thought existed. The only person who could help her heal is the same person who loved her brother as much as she did, his best friend. She only hopes to keep her entire heart from breaking when Jesse will move on, and she knows he will.

After Ethan died, Jesse excelled at basketball, partying, and girls. He used it all to turn his emotions off, but the irony was that Alex was the only person who could do that for him. She helped him forget, but she was the one person he shouldn't be with because the secrets he knows could shatter everything. They could shatter her.

I started reading this pretty late in the evening and I remember putting it down to go to sleep and thinking 'It's a good thing Tijan's books have so much emotional angst in them, that way I'm not tooooo wrapped up in it to go to sleep at night. A nice break from the story is just what I need to recollect myself and continue on' but then, 10 minutes later, I'm not asleep yet and I am unable to resist the urge to pick it back up and continue reading. I ended up staying up until almost 2am to finish even though I needed to be up by 5am. Good Night Sleep Fail!

What to say about Broken and Screwed? It was incredible. I laughed but mostly cried. Alex's life is just sad. It breaks my heart to read about what she's going through. When her brother dies, she's seriously affected by it. We all would be, right? Well I don't know if this is how a normal person behaves. A year later and she's still having break downs on a semi-regular basis. Jesse, her brother's best friend is really struggling as well. He's managed to cut off all emotions in his life and just tries to block everything out. The few time's when he's unable to, he turns to Alex for comfort in the form of hot sweaty fun. Unfortunately the next morning, he's not that into seeing the reminder of his best friend and he kicks her to the curb pretty quick. But Alex has been in love with Jesse forever so as much as that time of comfort helps, it also hurts her.

Alex's parents are WOW.. just WOW. They're going through their own grieving and end up leaving Alex alone to do her own thing. It's painful to read and imagine how she must feel.

You're in for a ride with this book but beware, the ride doesn't end at the end. You get no answers. You only get a sad emotional ride. In August, Broken and Screwed 2 comes out and we hope to finish this story of Alex and Jesse and their heartbreak.

Every damn thing.

That part 2 isn't out yet
